During calcination or calcining, calcium carbonate (CaCO 3) is heated in a cement kiln to form lime, a process that emits CO 2 as a byproduct. The resulting lime reacts in the kiln with silica, aluminum, and iron oxides present in the raw material to produce clinker. Clinker, an intermediate product, is mixed with a small amount of gypsum.
