A lay person — someone who shares or has shared the group's common experience — often leads a support group, but a group also may be led by a professional facilitator, such as a nurse, social worker or psychologist. Peer support groups are regular gatherings of people trying to overcome a substance abuse issue. These groups either meet online or in person, and group discussion is usually led by a facilitator who also has experience with addiction.
