One workaround i've demised is putting heads and limbs on drying racks outside my walls, and lighting them with a skull lamp, as a sort of poor-man's effigy. In our current day 62 playthrough with 3 friends we get attacked by multiple mutants (often blue ones) throughout every game day and there's always a load of effigies right outside our fortress whenever we go out. It seems like it's used to mark hostiles (aka. the player), so that other cannibals are careful.
